- In all situations you should be able to seek assistance from other members of your team, and from supervisors and managers. This is especially true when you run into problems or tasks that you have not run into before. Teams that are prepared to ask for and accept assistance create a supportive and positive atmosphere.
- Creating a supportive and positive atmosphere does not have to be complicated or onerous. It begins with encouraging support and appreciation by and for colleagues. Research has proven that poor teamwork is one of the most influential causes of workplace stress,burnout, health problems and poor performance. Creating positive relationships at work will go a long way towards alleviating workplace stress and increasing stamina.
- In times of stress, the natural reflex of many people is to withdraw. This is not necessarily a positive behavior. If, instead of withdrawing, you speak to your colleagues, there are numerous benefits, including the ability to handle stressful situations without becoming physically or emotionally vulnerable.
- Your co-workers can help you resolve problems. They can offer practical assistance, such as sharing your workload, moving a deadline or providing information. They might act as a sounding board. Simply explaining your problem to someone else can help to bring it into focus and identify the main issues so that a solution becomes clear. They might have personal experience of or witnessed the problem before. If so, they can tell you how they solved the problem. Alternately, they might be detached or unstressed enough to see alternatives or solutions that you cannot.
